Global Warming

One of the top discussions topic in UN agenda lately has drawn substantial attention from scientific community, a possible detrimental effect is demonstrated in the documentary film by VP Gore titled “ An Inconvenient Truth” , the extreme climate change worldwide is attributed partly by this phenomena due to excessive carbon emission into our atmosphere, the earth temperature is rising steadily over the years, human is faced with ever unpredictable weather pattern and higher intensity of natural disasters like hurricane, tornado, monsoon rain, and flood than normal, will human be able to overcome this enormous challenge ahead and wise enough to reverse the trend or mitigate the harmful consequence is highly questionable.

UN carbon emission treaty formally known as “Kyoto Protocol” has not been effective at all in curbing this harmful gas to a tolerable level since it adoption, the secretary general has make a renew call for a new treaty among nations to combat this rising threat to our earth and human survival. Without the active participation and strict adherence to the standard set forth and agreed upon by industrial nations like E.U, USA, and Japan, the treaty is meaningless and UN effort will be futile. As presently, USA is the biggest emitter of carbon in the world which constituted about 25% of total carbon in our atmosphere annually. Couple with provision of maximum allowable cap impose on industrialize nations like China , India and Brazil in the future, I believe an achievable goal of mitigating global warming is possible, if not a reversal course. India n China are mentioned specifically here because of their recent economy growth and no doubt will be the next world economical powerhouses, which make them possible next biggest carbon emitter after USA in the next century.

With all these hypes and talks in UN, we citizens of the world just have to wait and see whether UN can pressure if not persuade it own members to jump in the bandwagon of a global agenda especially among its all powerful permanent Security Council members.
